The Hypercar

The hypercar, just about every automotive fan should know that term. Just about everyone should anyway. For those who don't know, hypercars are supercars taken to the extreme. They usually come with hundreds of horsepower, minimal weight, and high price tags.
A square is a rectangle but a rectangle isn't a square. Take that sentence and replace square with hypercar and rectangle with supercar. An Audi R8 is an incredible supercar, but it is no match to the 1500 horsepower Bugatti Chiron.

There is a grey area between which cars are classified as hypercars and which aren't, as there are no specific restrictions for which cars qualify as hypercars, but here is a list of hypercars and their specs, and some that might be considered hypercars by some. (Disclaimer these are the base models for the cars, for example the Koenigsegg Agera has multiple options, but the base option is the one observed.)

The Holy Trinity

When thinking of hypercars, 3 automatically come to mind. These are the original 3 cars to be granted the name, "hypercar," and they are usually grouped as The Holy Trinity. The 3 cars debuted in 2014 as competition for each other and are pretty evenly matched. These 3 cars are the Porsche 918 Spyder, the Ferrari LaFerrari, and the McLaren P1.

The German Porsche 918 Spyder is an incredible piece of machinery. This $845,000 hypercar includes 4.6 L V8 with extra electric motors at both the front and back of the car, giving it 887 hp, while weighing 3602 lbs. With that comes a top speed of 217 mph. The Porsche 918 Spyder fitted with the Weissach Package set a record lap time at the Nürburgring in September 2013 with a time of 6:57, making it the first car to break the 7 minute barrier. That record has been beaten 5 times since then, check out the newest leader here. The most notable feature of this car is its stock lime green brake calipers.

The title of the first Italian hypercar goes to the Ferrari LaFerrari. Translated, it is Ferrari, The Ferrari. The Ferrari is a 1.42 million dollar car that is absolutely insane. The Ferrari contains a 6.3 L V12, an electric motor, and a kinetic energy recovery system, making it eco-friendly. While containing more horsepower (949), and weighing less (2767 lbs) than the 918 Spyder, their top speeds are the same. A LaFerrari sold at auction for $10 million, making it the highest amount paid for a 21st Century car at auction. The car can be seen from a mile away with its unique tail lights.

The final car of The Holy Trinity comes from McLaren. This English hypercar is priced between the 918 Spyder and The Ferrari at $1.35 million. The power comes from a 3.8 L twin-turbocharged V8, and an electric motor to put out a total of 909 horsepower and coming in at a final weight of 3411 lbs, making it the 2nd most powerful, 2nd lightest, and 2nd most expensive. With all the second places out of 3 comes on first place tie, top speed, at 217 mph. Currently, the McLaren P1 holds production car lap time records at Circuit of the Americas, Algarve International Circuit, Anglesey Coastal Circuit, and Silverstone National Circuit. Apparently, there are a few things the P1 doesn't take 2nd place in.

The Holy Trinity: Koenigsegg Edition

The Swedish auto manufacturer, Koenigsegg, has their own "Holy Trinity" of hypercars. These are the Agera, One:1, and Regera.

Starting from the left is the $2.1 million Koenigsegg Agera. The Koenigsegg Agera is fitted with a 5.0 L twin-turbo V8. With 940 horsepower and weighing 3,075 lbs, the Agera can reach speeds of 249 mph. The Agera RS holds the 0-400-0 record at 36.44 seconds and 2,441 meters. The Agera RS also holds the production car speed record at 284.6 mph. The Koenigsegg Agera was one of the cars in the DeLeon in the 2014 movie, Need For Speed.

The car on the right, yet to be released, is still a monster of a car. This monster is the Koenigsegg One:1. It was given the name for its perfect power to weight ratio (in horsepower:kilograms). Given 420 more horsepower than the Agera, and at 1360 horsepower and kilograms, it's been given the classification of the step above hypercar, the megacar. It is just an incredibly upgraded Agera, but at that point, it's an entirely different car.

The car front and center is the one-gear-wonder, Koenigsegg Regera. The $1.9 million car is fitted with a 5.0 L twin-turbo V8, 2 YASA 750 R motors, and 1 YASA P400 motor. With 4 sources of power comes quite a bit of weight, 3510 lbs. The Regera is electronically limited to 255 mph, but gets to 249 in just 20 seconds, without a single gear shift.

The Bugatti Duo

No hypercar list is complete without the inclusion of the brand that started it all, Bugatti. The 2 considered hypercars are the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse and the Bugatti Chiron.

The Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse is the first true hypercar from the French Manufacturer. An 8.0 L quad-turbocharged W16 powers this 1,200 horsepower beast. 1,200 horsepower sounds like a lot, but this $2.2 million car also weighs 4,387 lbs. It became the fastest open-top production car with a top speed of 254 mph. The Veyron is easily pointed out due to its design.

The newest car to the Bugatti lineup is the Bugatti Chiron. Using the same engine as the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse, the Chiron is able to pump out 279 more horsepower. The Chiron also shaved off 27 lbs in weight compared to the Grand Sport Vitesse. The Bugatti Chiron can reach a speed of 261 mph. Released on June 1st, 2018, Lego created a Technic series set of the Bugatti Chiron at a 1:8 scale containing 3,600 pieces.

McLaren's Up-And-Comer

It comes with no surprise that the English manufacturer has a follow-up to the P1 only 4 years later. That car is the McLaren Senna. The Senna comes with a 4.0 L twin-turbocharged V8, and an incredible 1,763 lbs of downforce. It only weighs 2,646 lbs, which allows it to reach 211 mph. The McLaren Senna is featured as the main cover car for Forza Horizon 4.

Lamborghini's Three

Lamborghini has made a name for itself in the hypercar world by making 2 hypercars, but it  could also be considered 3. The Lamborghini Veneno and Centenario are the 2 hypercars, but the Sesto Elemento could also be considered a hypercars.

The Lamborghini Veneno is the hypercar that looks most like a fighter jet. Using a 6.5 L V12, it can produce 750 horsepower. It weighs 3,200 lbs and has a $4.5 million price tag, which makes sense because only 9 units were made.

The Lamborghini Centenario contains the same 6.5 L V12 as the Veneno, but at 3,350 lbs, 770 horsepower, it can reach 217 mph and has a price of $2.3 million. The Centenario was featured as the cover car for Forza Horizon 3.

One of the controversial hypercars is the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento, because it isn't road legal. While the car uses a 5.2 L V10 and only has 570 horsepower, it only weighs 2,202 lbs. The Sesto Elemento goes for a price of $2.92 million, but it tops out at 210 mph. The car was also featured in the DeLeon in Need For Speed (2014).

The Valkyrie is an unknown car throughout the world, but it exists. It contains a 6.5 L naturally aspirated V12 which gives it 1,130 horsepower. Not only does it have a lot of power, it only weighs 2,271 lbs. The low weight and lots of power allows it to get up to 250 mph. The car will go for a whopping $3.2 million.

The Final Italian Duo

We now move to the final Italian brand that produces hypercars, Pagani. Pagani has both the Zonda and the Huayra. The Zonda is one of the early hypercars, coming before the Holy Trinity.

The Pagani Huayra is a car with strange mirrors. It contains a 6 liter V12, which gives it 764 horsepower. It doesn't have much horsepower compared to some of the other cars on this list, but only weighs 2,685 lbs. The Huayra also costs $1.4 million. The Huayra appears in Transformers: Age of Extinction as the Decepticon, Stinger.

Miscellaneous Hypercars

The ST1 is a hypercar produced by the Danish manufacturer, Zenvo. The car holds a 7.0 L twincharged V8 that pushes out 1104 horsepower. With such a large engine, it weighs 3,721 lbs. The 3,721 lbs will cost you $1.8 million, but will allow you to reach a speed of 233 mph. The car became famous after it caught fire on Top Gear due to a cooling unit failure. Below is a picture of the car, and a picture of Jeremy Clarkson inside of it while on fire.

The Hennessey Venom GT is the only American car on this list. Hennessey put a 7.0 L twin-turbocharged V8 into the Venom GT which gives it a total of 1,451 horsepower, while weighing 2,773 lbs. At a price of $1.2 million, it reaches a top speed of 270 mph.
