TVR Might Have Built A Better Supra Than... Toyota
TVR might have made a better Toyota before the Toyota has even been released. The TVR Griffith is the topic of this article, because it might have beaten Toyota to producing a Supra. Next to each other, there is some resemblance.
The "New Supra" was originally going to be titled the Toyota FT-1 and was first revealed at the 2014 New York Auto Show (Below Left). After a few changes over the course of 4 years, the Toyota Supra will be making its return to the streets after nearly two decades. The thing is, Toyota is getting help from the Germans, BMW. Both the engine, a 3.0 L six cylinder overhead cam unit, and the gearbox are taken from BMW. The platform is also the same as the 2019 BMW Z4 (Below Middle). As we can see from the 2019 Supra (Below Right), the cars are not the exact same, but they have many similarities.
Not only does the TVR Griffith look like Z4 and the Supra, the specs are similar as well. We don't have any specs on the BMW Z4 because they will most likely be revealed at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, which takes place on August 26th. We do have a few specs on both the Griffith and the Supra, however.
Starting with the Supra, it will have 335 bhp, a 0-60 mph at 4.5 seconds and weigh 3,298 lbs. The estimated top speed for the Supra is 186 mph and is rumored to be priced around $63,500.
Switching to the Second Generation Griffith, it will contain a 5.0 L Cosworth Ford Coyote V8 that will produce 500 hp, 165 more than the Supra. It is estimated to have a 0-60 time of 4 seconds, half a second faster than the Supra. It will weigh 2,756 lbs as well, 542 lighter, and will have a top speed of 200 mph (Estimated), faster than the Supra by 14 mph. There is no set price for the Griffith, but for the Launch Edition, it will cost nearly $120,000, the only category where the Supra wins. The price of the Griffith once it is released more widely will probably be in the $80,000 to $100,000 range.
This car is certainly not the best priced car for the speed it can reach, as a Nissan GTR is faster, cheaper, and has one of the coolest names for a supercar ever, Godzilla. Nonetheless, this car is an incredible competitor for the supercar market.
